The legacy VTK file reader previously only supported a specific set of Vec
lengths (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 9). This is because a basic array
handle has to have the vec length compiled in. However, the new
`ArrayHandleRuntimeVec` feature is capable of reading in any vec-length
and can be leveraged to read in arbitrarily sized vectors in field
arrays.
Some of the data sets that are included from VTK-m are derived from the
VisIt Tutorial Data (https://www.visitusers.org/index.php?title=Tutorial_Data).
These are covered by the VisIt license, as communicated by Eric Brugger.
Although the license for these data is compatible with VTK-m's license,
we should still attribute the source of the data and make clear the
copyrights. The data are moved into the third_party directory, and
readmes are added to document everything.
The noise.vtk and noise.bov files have been renamed example.vtk and
example_temp.bov to match the name of the file in the VisIt tutorial
data archive. The ucd3d.vtk file, which is similar to the curv3d.silo
data but altered, has been removed. It was not used for any tests. It
was referenced in a couple of example programs, but the reference is
easily changed.
Some of the test data sets are derived from data sets that are commonly
distributed to test visualization algorithms and are featured in
numerous papers. However, I am unable to track down the original source
let alone identify what license, if any, they were released under. To
avoid any complications with data ownership, remove these data sets and
replace them with in house data sets that we explicitly own.
Previously, `DataSet` managed `CoordinateSystem`s separately from `Field`s.
However, a `CoordinateSystem` is really just a `Field` with some special
attributes. Thus, coordiante systems are now just listed along with the
rest of the fields, and the coordinate systems are simply strings that
point back to the appropriate field. (This was actually the original
concept for `DataSet`, but the coordinate systems were separated from
fields for some now obsolete reasons.)
The legacy VTK reader sometimes has to permute cell data because some
VTK cells are not directly supported in VTK-m. (For example, triangle
strips are not supported. They have to be converted to triangles.)
The global and petigree identifiers were not properly getting permuted.
This is now fixed.
Several revisions ago, the ability to use virtual methods in the
execution environment was deprecated. Completely remove this
functionality for the VTK-m 2.0 release.

The legacy VTK file reader for unstructured grids had a bug when reading
cells of type voxel. VTK-m does not support the voxel cell type in
unstructured grids (i.e. explicit cell sets), so it has to convert them to
hexahedron cells. A bug in the reader was mangling the cell array index
during this conversion.
The enumerations in `vtkm::cont::Field::Association` were renamed in the
previous commit. The old names still exist, but are deprecated. Change
the rest of the code to use the new names.
We have been doing a better job at hiding device code (and moving code
into libraries). Smoke out source that no longer needs to be compiled by
device compilers.
The legacy VTK file writer writes out in ASCII. This is helpful when a
human is trying to read the file. However, if you have more than a
trivial amount of data, the file can get impractically large. To get
around this, `VTKDataSetWriter` now has a flag that allows you to write
the data in binary format.
Reduces the amount of code that has to be generated. Also improves the
number of arrays supported and has better support for deprecated
versions of `GetRange`.
There was an error that caused deprecation warnings in VTK-m to be
suppressed, which meant that many uses of deprecated features went
unnoticed. This fixes those deprecation warnings.
The majority of the warnings were caused by the use of the deprecated
`Cast`, `CopyTo`, and `ResetTypes` methods of `UnknownArrayHandle` (or
`VariantArrayHandle`). Both `Cast` and `CopyTo` have been subsumed by
`AsArrayHandle` (to make the functionality more clear). `ResetTypes` now
requires a second template argument to define the storage types to try.
Also fixed some issues with `SerializableField` being deprecated.
This class is no longer necessary because `Field` can now be directly
serialized.
As we remove more and more virtual methods from VTK-m, I expect several
users will be interested in completely removing them from the build for
several reasons.
1. They may be compiling for hardware that does not support virtual
methods.
2. They may need to compile for CUDA but need shared libraries.
3. It should go a bit faster.
To enable this, a CMake option named `VTKm_NO_DEPRECATED_VIRTUAL` is
added. It defaults to `OFF`. But when it is `ON`, none of the code that
both uses virtuals and is deprecated will be built.
Currently, only `ArrayHandleVirtual` is deprecated, so the rest of the
virtual classes will still be built. As we move forward, more will be
removed until all virtual method functionality is removed.
The `UnitTestVTKDataSetReader` test reads in .vtk files of multiple
formats. The origins of this test predate the use of git-lfs and a data
directory, so the test defined in the source code several strings
containing the contents of the files.
That is no longer necessary. This change removes those strings from the
file and creates actual files in the data directory. This is easier to
manage as well as more convenient if you want to use the same data in a
different test or just take a look at the data in a different program
(such as VisIt or ParaView).
The testing helper class provided a method named `GetTestDataBasePath`
that returned the base path to all the data files stored in the VTK-m
repo. This is fine, but it was a little cumbersome to build filenames.
To make things easier, there is now a new method named `DataPath` that
takes a string of the filename (or, rather, subpath) to the file in that
directory and automatically builds the path to it.
As a programming convenience, all `vtkm::cont::DataSet` written by
`vtkm::io::VTKDataSetWriter` were written as a structured grid. Although
technically correct, it changed the structure of the data. This meant that
if you wanted to capture data to run elsewhere, it would run as a different
data type. This was particularly frustrating if the data of that structure
was causing problems and you wanted to debug it.
Now, `VTKDataSetWriter` checks the type of the `CoordinateSystem` to
determine whether the data should be written out as `STRUCTURED_POINTS`
(i.e. a uniform grid), `RECTILINEAR_GRID`, or `STRUCTURED_GRID`
(curvilinear).
