<H3>How to use the PMD Plugin with large projects</H3>

|
When PMD is used with large projects, ie. project that holds a lot of source files,
|
|
performance issues can occur. The plugin brings two features that helps in such situations.
|
|

|
|
|
<P>
|
|
The first feature is tight with the autobuild option : when PMD is set enabled for a project,
|
|
a dialog asks if the project should be rebuilt or not. If the project is a large project, then
|
|
it is probably best to answer no to this question. In that case, files will be checked
|
|
only when they will be updated or when new files will be added. Otherwise, the entire project
|
|
will be recompiled and PMD will run on each file : this could spend a long time.

|
The second feature is the use of a working set. Working set is a feature brought by Eclipse.
|
|
A working set is a kind of filter specification. When you define a working set, you
|
|
select projects, source files or packages you want to include. Working sets are normally used
|
|
for resources views filtering. The PMD plugin uses also working set to determine if a file
|
|
should be checked or not.

To enable working set filtering, open the project properties dialog and go to the PMD page.
|
|
Below the enabling checkbox, a text say if a working set is active for this project or not.
|
|
There are also two push buttons that let you define a working set for this project. The
|
|
"Deselect working set" button is used to delete the working set specification. The "Select
|
|
working set" button displays the standard dialog that let you choose and define a working set.
|
|
Only one working set can be selected.
|
|

This feature is enabled even if PMD is disabled for this project. That means that when a
|
|
manual checking is requested (by selecting "Check code with PMD" in the context menu),
|
|
the working set filtering is still active.
